Mom Hacks: Valentine Edition

February 11, 2015 by Dannielle Kyrillos

We all know that moms are real-life superheroes, flying from place to place and making magic happen daily.  Mom hacks are how we get it all done without going bonkers.  I have a few super-easy ones to share to help you show your family and yourself a little extra love this V-Day.

For You, Mama

First, I dream of not looking like a zombie one of these days, with "one" being the operative word there.  It's hard enough to get out the door remembering to wear shoes, let alone feeling glamorous.  We all know more sleep and drinking tons of water are the real cures for those dark, puffy circles under our eyes.  But I remembered an old trick I heard from an aging model I ran into when I first moved to New York.  I feel silly even typing this, but it involves Preparation H, the ancient remedy for, well, hemorrhoids.  Being extremely careful not to get any in your eyes (that would be terrible), smear a tiny bit on each of those zombie circles underneath, and leave on for 15 minutes while you're making breakfast or getting people dressed.  Carefully wipe clean and you'll feel at least 10 years younger all day.  (This is a once-in-a-while, special occasion trick, and again, please be extra careful not to get any in your peepers, that would be a disaster!)

And who has time to get her hair done, I ask you?!  For a Valentine's refresh, or simply to feel more human in the middle of a busy week, dry shampoo is our new best friend.  It used to be kind of creepy and make you look like you were wearing a powdered wig, but these days it's a dream come true.  When there's barely time for a shower, let alone a blow-dry, spritz some of this wonderstuff on your nearly greasy, tired hair, and suddenly your locks are not only fresh and clean-looking-and-smelling, they have that European cinema star bounce.  I love Kevin Murphy's Fresh.Hair, but the brands you'll find in the drugstore have come a long way and work perfectly too.

This is my default hair most days.  I clearly need to remember this dry shampoo stuff!  ;)

Ahhhhh, Pizza

It feels like as moms we spend the most time and energy worrying about feeding our families wholesome food they’ll enjoy.  My secret weapon on this front is Papa Murphy’s take and bake pizza, especially something I call the “Sneaky Spinach.”  When you order, choose spinach as your topping and ask them to put it under the cheese.  Everything’s so customizable there; you can really make it your own.  So you pull a regular looking pizza out of your oven, with protein-packed spinach discreetly baked in.  Kids don’t have time to argue before they realize how good it is.  It’s real pizza, real flavor, and you feel really good about it.

And let’s talk about Valentine’s Day.  It is the last night you want to go out---it’s too crowded, too rushed, too expensive, and it never ends up being relaxed or fun.   Take the pressure off and start a new tradition this year.  Family Valentine’s date night at home with a Papa Murphy’s HeartBaker.  Kids go nuts for heart-shaped pizza, we parents get to relax, dinner is easy and delicious, and you remember how much you love your gang.  Play games, sing songs, and reconnect, then you get a grown-up night out next week!

Fresh Breakfast, Every Day

I spend a lot of time making smoothies so you don't have to!

I spend a lot of time making smoothies so you don't have to!

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to start this one--You have fresh-made, healthy smoothies every day of the week in the bag, because the secret is actually bags!  Spend 20 minutes one day putting enough fresh cut fruit, oats, chia seeds--whatever you like—for a family-sized batch of smoothies in one Ziploc for each day of the week. During the morning rush, just grab a bag, dump the contents in the blender, add a little plain Greek yogurt and voila, tastier, healthier and way less expensive than any fancy juice bar.  One more super thing about using bags is that if you don't get to a day's bag, just toss it in the freezer and pull it out any morning.  And I re-use the bags themselves as many times as I can.  Yay, Mom!

Ma'amoul

February 17, 2014 by Dannielle Kyrillos

This mold is more than 100 years old (!!), so it makes cookies that tell stories when you taste them. Ma'amoul are a special Lebanese treat that are like little teacakes filled with nuts or dates.  Cappy and I studied with the master this weekend and are going to make some tomorrow as part of a very special project.

Dinner Date

He didn't have much to say for himself, but I quite enjoyed him!  Thanks to the much livelier M. Lynch for masterfully capturing this portrait. Such a nice evening in Red Bank filled with delicious conversation at local favorite, Dish.

Sharks Patrol These Waters

February 15, 2014 by Dannielle Kyrillos

Other favorite island, St. Croix: Every evening around 5:15, the team at Duggan's feeds the sharks.  They're not quite open for business yet, but if you're nice they'll fix you a cocktail and let you watch as they toss the previous day's leftover fish and meat into the water off the deck.  Tarpon arrive first, then this lady.  I wish I had a shot of her leaping out of the water and chomping apart that steak...

That's Why I Love You, New York

February 15, 2014 by Dannielle Kyrillos

At a time when nights out are a little less frequent than they used to be, it is such a special and super-fun treat to spend an evening at The Allen Room, part of Jazz at Lincoln Center.  I would sit there and stare out the window looking out at Columbus Circle with no additional entertainment, quite happily.  But every show is a revelation.  This one was masterful, mystical guitarist Bill Frisell, American treasure Buddy Miller, and the intoxicating Carrie Rodriguez pondering the Bristol Sessions, which were seminal recordings made in 1937 in rural Tennessee.

With Friends Like These...

February 15, 2014 by Dannielle Kyrillos

Our friends Tim and Stephanie moved to Wisconsin after years on St. Croix.  Their response to the frigid conditions seems to be to create gorgeous, loving works of art for friends near and far.  How lucky are we?!

Whatcha wanna eat? Ribs! (Latoya, we DO serve ribs!)

February 15, 2014 by Dannielle Kyrillos

We took advantage of the *one* warm day this winter to fire up the Hasty Bake and sizzle up the yummiest ribs.  The arrival of our new neighbor, the awesome butchers of Hudson & Charles, has made last-minute, high-quality home cooking SO much easier!  It's like Brooklyn has arrived in the West Village.  ;)

Breakfast Breakthrough

July 15, 2011 by Dannielle Kyrillos in Entertaining, Food

I thought cucumbers with breakfast eggs would be a jarring combination that wouldn't work at all, but it turned out to be everything good about finger sandwiches, all in one bite. Thank you, Summer!

They Tell Me LA's Beautiful When it Rains

June 03, 2011 by Dannielle Kyrillos in Travel

You've probably heard of Neko Case, and maybe even love her. She often sings with the New Pornographers, and has pipes so powerful they'll stop you in your tracks, make you cry, all that stuff amazing voices can do. Whenever I'm in LA, a beautiful, melancholy song she sings called "In California," actually written by a lady named Lisa Marr, pops into my head a lot. It captures how you feel when your mood doesn't match the sun. It also references Bonnie Brae, a superbly named street you drive past a lot if you're staying Downtown and don't like to ever take the highway.

A Nice Fable from The Spice Table

June 03, 2011 by Dannielle Kyrillos in Food, Travel

Once upon a time, there was a wizard-chef named Bryant Ng and his fair lady, Kim. They took over an crumbling old warehouse-like building in Downtown Los Angeles's Little Tokyo and made it cozy and inviting, with a nice, sturdy bar right up front, softly glowing, hanging lamps fashioned from bird cages, and long wooden tables. Each day (except Sunday) at lunch and dinner, their palace, called the Spice Table, is filled with the flavors of Singapore and Vietnam, and especially pleasant wafts of smoke from sizzling meats on open flames. Wanderers from across the land arrive and eat satays of lamb belly and chile prawns, and an intriguing concoction of peanuts and anchovies, which certainly contains a love potion of some sort. They feast on kon loh mee--egg noodles with ground pork and spices, and always save room for Kaffir lime custard. They wake up the next morning in their own beds wondering if it had been a hazy dream, but then realize that pile of clothes at the foot of the bed really does smell like smoked meat. The moral of our story? Even if a wily fox or up-to-no-good scorpion offers to lead you to The Spice Table, take him up on it. And order more than you at first think will be enough. There's a crisp Albarino that goes perfectly, too.
